Why “Just Relax” Doesn’t Work (And What to Do Instead)

When you are already overwhelmed, being told to “just relax” can feel impossible, even shaming. This article explores why your body resists calm when stress is chronic, and introduces gentle, science-informed tools — including somatic safety and EFT tapping — that Christina Barter will explore more deeply in an upcoming Nature’s Pure Love webinar.

Why “Just Relax” Doesn’t Work

If you have ever been lying awake at 3 a.m., mind racing, and someone tells you to “just relax,” you already know: if it were that simple, you would have done it. Chronic stress is not a mindset problem or a lack of willpower. It is a nervous system state.

When the body has been on high alert for weeks, months, or even years, the “off switch” for stress is not easily accessible. Your heart, breath, hormones, and muscles have learned to live in survival mode. Being told to relax can feel invalidating — as though you are choosing tension, when in reality your system is doing its best to keep you safe with the tools it currently has.

Why an Overloaded Nervous System Resists Calm

The nervous system has one primary job: protect you. When it senses ongoing pressure — workload, family demands, health worries, financial strain — it gradually shifts into a chronic fight, flight, or freeze pattern. In this state, calm can actually feel unsafe or unfamiliar.

  • Your body scans for danger, even when you are at home on the sofa.

  • Slowing down may trigger worries: “If I stop, everything will fall apart.”

  • The mind loops through “what if?” scenarios to stay prepared.

From this perspective, your resistance to rest is not a flaw. It is a protective pattern that has simply become stuck in the “on” position. To shift it, we need more than positive thinking — we need to involve the body itself.

Debunking the Myth of “Choosing” Relaxation

The idea that people can simply choose to relax suggests that stress is purely psychological. For many adults Nature’s Pure Love supports — busy professionals, carers, and older adults managing health changes — this belief adds guilt on top of exhaustion: “Why can everyone else cope? What’s wrong with me?”

In reality, chronic stress reshapes habits, chemistry, and perception. You cannot bully your body into ease. Sustainable wellbeing comes from working with your nervous system, not against it — offering gentle signals of safety until it feels able to soften.

Small, body-based practices teach your nervous system it is safe to ease its grip.

What Is Somatic Safety?

Somatic safety simply means “felt safety in the body.” Rather than telling yourself you are safe, you begin to notice and nurture the physical cues of safety: steadier breathing, softer muscles, a sense of being supported by the chair beneath you, warmth in your hands, or a loosening in your jaw.

Nature’s Pure Love focuses on practices that build somatic safety gradually. This is not about forcing relaxation, but about offering your body enough reassurance that it chooses to downshift, even for a few seconds at a time. Over weeks and months, these brief moments can add up to meaningful change in how you cope with daily life.

Gentle Releases That Actually Work

Instead of demanding that the body relax, gentle releases invite it. They are small, repeatable actions that signal, “In this moment, you are safe enough to soften a little.” Examples include:

  • Lengthening your exhale by one or two counts.

  • Gently pressing your feet into the floor and noticing the contact.

  • Placing a warm hand over your heart or upper chest.

These are not quick fixes. They are invitations — ways of saying to your nervous system, “You do not have to hold everything alone right now.”

How EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Supports Somatic Safety

EFT, often called “tapping,” combines gentle touch with focused attention. You lightly tap on specific acupressure points on the face and upper body while acknowledging what you are feeling. This blend of physical contact and honest emotional language can help the body process stress signals in a calmer way.

In the upcoming Nature’s Pure Love webinar, Christina Barter will introduce core EFT principles, including:

  • Gentle acceptance: meeting your feelings without judgement or pressure to “be positive.”

  • Body–mind connection: using tapping points to calm the nervous system while you name your concerns.

  • Step-by-step pacing: working at a speed that feels safe and manageable for you.

EFT is not a replacement for medical care, but it can be a supportive tool alongside it — especially for those who feel stuck in worry, tension, or emotional overwhelm.

A Simple “Micro-Release” You Can Try Right Now

This gentle practice takes less than a minute and can be done almost anywhere. It is not about forcing relaxation; it is about creating a small pocket of somatic safety.

  1. Place a hand on your chest. Let your palm rest over your heart or upper chest. Notice the warmth and weight of your hand.

  2. Exhale slightly longer. Breathe in through your nose for a gentle count of four, then out through your mouth for a count of six. Do this three times, without strain.

  3. Offer one kind sentence. Silently say to yourself, “It’s understandable that I feel this way,” or any phrase that feels honest and kind.

Notice any tiny shift — a softer jaw, a deeper breath, or simply the sense that you are back in your body. That is a micro-release. It may be small, but repeated often, it begins to retrain your nervous system to trust moments of ease.

💡 Gentle Reminder: If you feel more unsettled at any point, pause, open your eyes, and look around the room, naming three things you can see. You are always in charge of the pace.
